WHO CARES ABOUT NUMBERS?

You can’t go very far without having a certain amount of respect for numbers! Just ask Nick Foles or Tom Brady what numbers mean! Their income is greatly affected by numbers – did they get that 1st down? No? They needed how many more yards? That almost-a-touchdown that turned into a field goal – that only meant a 4 point difference – what’s 4 points? Why do we make such a big deal about the numbers in our businesses? I need to make money! I don’t have time to fool around with – “is this an advertising expense or is it a personal expense?” I don’t have the time to worry about getting a discount by paying within 10 days – I need to make money!! Yes, I’m paying more for expense reimbursement for my employees – but that’s part of doing business, right?

Yes, you do need to spend your time doing what you do best – running your business! But—-those numbers are important and they can mean the difference between getting a profit and losing a business. Early trends that are noticed can turn a downward spiral into a cost-saving change. Categorizing expenses correctly will help when it comes time to file taxes. Taking advantage of discounts when possible can add up to real savings. That increased expense for employees can signal employees helping themselves to unauthorized discounts.

What can you do?

Hiring a bookkeeper is a personal decision that you have to make for your business. If you cannot find a way to do this right now, make sure that you are watching your numbers! Don’t ignore them because they are not going to go away and unless you make necessary changes, they will not get better.

If you would like to spend more time doing what you do best – using your gifts to build your business – please carefully consider hiring a bookkeeper. There are many options out there for you and you need to carefully consider what would work best for your business. Do you want an in-house bookkeeper? Carefully look at resumes and references and find the person that best fits your company. If you don’t want to add on more employees, consider hiring an outside source. Make sure your candidate has the proper experience and education to do the job properly. Consider which software would work best for your business – does that person have experience in that software?

Hiring a bookkeeper may seem like a drain of limited financial resources, but the benefits realized can far outweigh the expense.
